NORFOLK, Neb. (US92/KTIV) -
It's been nearly a year since we've driven on snowy and icy roads. It's also been a while since we've walked on slippery sidewalks and driveways.
One mis-step can lead to a fall, and painful injuries, like back or pelvic pain from shoveling snow, or falling on the ice.
Officials with Taylor Creed Physical Therapy, in Norfolk, Nebraska, say when patients come in, there is often long periods of therapy to help get them back to normal activity. Some patients may be required to use crutches, a wheelchair or wear a walking boot. Kristi Jagels, Taylor Creek Physical Therapy says, "People are in a hurry and we just need to slow down because we don't realize that the fracture or the injury that occurs from a fall will certainly change your next 2, 3 or 4 months down the road."
Jagels says when a fall occurs, some people believe they will get over it soon. But, in most cases they don't. She says prevention is the key to everything. "Make sure your path is clear. That your feet are secure on the ice and that you're taking your time to get from point A to point B. Making sure you don't have numerous things in your hand as you're trying to get in and out of the car because we certainly need to hang on to things when we're moving through ice and snow," Jagels said.
Jagels says if everyone takes it easy on the ice, the injury can be prevented. That, in turn, will save you time down the road.
