SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -

KTIV's top stories for Monday.

Woodbury County is getting ready to begin a new era with a new sheriff.

Dave Drew, a 29-year veteran of the Sheriff's Department was elected in November to replace retiring sheriff Glenn Parrett.

Drew says one of his priorities is getting the deputies and the whole department involved, whether on the road or the water.

Drew says that means more frequent discussions with city and school leaders as well as the public about making the community a safer place.

He'll take over officially on January 2nd.

Defense cuts impact Iowa guard units

Changes could be coming to Sioux City's 185th Air Refueling Wing after the US Senate approved a 633-billion dollar defense bill that includes billions in cuts.

Earlier this year, Colonel Greg Hapgood said the Refueling Wing could lose one of it's nine KC-135 refueling tankers.

But now, the effects of the cuts won't be as drastic as originally thought and he says Sioux City will likely get to keep all of its planes.

However, there could be minor changes at the Sioux City base.

U.S. Senators approved the bill Friday by an 84 to 14 vote.

Both of Iowa's senators voted against the measure.

A five-year-old delivers warmth for Christmas

Chance Richards from Onawa, Iowa collected 200 blankets to needy kids and this weekend, he and his family passed them out to families in their community and to residents in local nursing homes.

The five-year-old came up with the idea and while doing it, he learned a valuable lesson about giving back.

His mother says she hopes the project encourages other parents to teach their children to give back.
