Siouxland shoppers go down to the wire to finish holiday shopping

'Twas the day before Christmas, and time was running out.

"It's been a little crazy. All the stores are packed, we've been to six stores already, and everybody's trying to get their last minute Christmas shopping done," said Liz Jacobson of Sioux City.

For many, buying and waiting were the themes of the day.

"Stood in line for about 20 minutes down at Scheel's, trying to buy stuff and everybody's just hurrying up, trying to get home," said Jacobson.

"Usually, I have all my Christmas shopping done," said Jan Bottger of Merrill, Iowa. "But I had to finish it up tonight."

Waltzing through the bustling stores, shoppers gobbled up their last minute gifts.

"Just getting a few little odds and ends, we've got most of the big purchases out of the way," said Paul Hendricksen of Sioux City.

"I'm definitely not a procrastinator, I like to have things done early," said Cathy Bumann of Dallas Center, Iowa.

Some were surprised by the turnout.

"I told my wife that she was crazy, wanting to come out the day before Christmas, but it hasn't been bad at all, it's been really good," said Hendricksen.

"I don't think it's too bad. Honestly, I don't. Actually got here by 10:30, 11, and it was pretty dead," said Bottger.

Some are taking their time, savoring the moments before the mall closed, and with it their chance to get their gifts.

"We're out here just to see what's going on, just to do some last minute people shopping," said Ruth Chartier of Moville, Iowa.

For some Christmas came early with some unexpected bargains.

"We usually save up until after Christmas when we think there's going to be all these great deals, but there's such great deals today, that we're all over it," said Mary Taylor of Denver, Colo.

It wasn't just the department stores that were packed out. Restaurants inside the mall saw some booming business hours, as people filled up their stomachs, after stuffing their shopping bags.
