JEFFERSON, S.D. (KTIV) -
Jefferson firefighters and Union County crews were called to a house fire at 405 West Dakota Street just before 7 a.m. on Christmas Day.
All family members were able to escape the house without injury.
"When I arrived the fire was already coming through the roof," said Bill McKelvey, Jefferson Fire and Police Chief. "And it spread through the attic pretty fast, and the main floor's dropped into the basement now."
Officials say they got the fire under control within an hour, but crews worked throughout the morning to slow smaller hot spots inside.
They say the home is a total loss.
The family is spending the day with neighbors and the American Red Cross will provide assistance.
