Police found the man inside his home, dead from an apparent gunshot wound.
VERMILLION, S.D. (KTIV) -
A man is dead after a long standoff in a Vermillion neighborhood Tuesday.
Police were called to 22 Crawford Road at 1 a.m. Tuesday for a domestic altercation. Neighbors say they heard screaming coming from down the street and thought it was a car wreck.
"The house across the street, where the incident occurred was all lit up and we weren't sure what was really going on at that time," said Richard Duman, a neighbor.
Police say a man inside was armed and holding two of his children hostage. They say around 4:30 a.m., the man released the kids, unharmed. Police eventually had to evacuate folks living in the area.
"We woke up this morning, I think the first thing that woke me up was a phone call from the city police department, saying that we need to evacuate," said Duman.
At 1:30 p.m., authorities went into the home to check on the man. They found him dead, from what looked to be a self-inflicted gun-shot wound.
Neighbors say the whole incident was shocking. They say the family appeared to be getting along very well.
