The Morningside men's basketball team has struggled the first two months of the season.
At 6-9 and the M'side Holiday Classic taking place Friday and Saturday, the Mustangs are looking to gain some momentum heading into the new year.
Before taking a break for the holidays, the Mustangs competed in Ft. Lauderdale at the Cruzin' Classic, going 1-1 in the tournament.
In their lone victory, M'side didn't just defeat NAIA D-I program Saint X, they dismantled them, cruising to a 17-point victory.
"To see that happen was very good, in terms of us taking steps forward. The following night we played Nova Southeastern, the host team, an NCAA division II school that we took to double overtime," Morningside Head Coach Jim Sykes said. "We had our opportunities, came up short but again was very pleased with the effort. Losing is never fun, but I thought the effort we gave was very good and we're taking steps forward."
With only two seniors on its roster, the Mustangs lack experience in their starting lineup.
But with 15 games under their belt, the squad says they're no longer looking to that as an excuse
and hoping to continue to showcase their growth in the Classic.
"Definitely not an excuse. We should be ready to play up and down our lineup," junior Danny Rudeen said. "It's real important for us. We play Friends and Dakota State, who we lost to both of them in the beginning of the year, so, it'll be nice for us to get a little revenge on them and get some momentum going into the conference schedule."
