SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa (KTIV) -

Iowa officials are reminding ice fishing enthusiasts to be careful with newly developed ice formed during a major snowstorm last week.

The state Department of Natural Resources says a minimum of four-inches of quality ice is recommended for ice fishing.

At least five-inches of ice is recommended for snowmobiles and all-terrain vehicles.

DNR officials also recommend using small baits and a light line for catching finicky fish.

The snowstorm dumped several inches of snow around the state last week.

It also ushered in low temperatures that left most lakes with a layer of ice.

Officials say Clear Lake has an ice thickness of six to eight inches.

Call 641-357-3517 for ice condition updates and fishing information.

Big Spirit Lake is locked-up and there is five to seven inches of ice in most areas.

On East Okoboji Lake there is roughly five to seven inches of ice but it may be thinner in areas toward the south end.

Silver Lake has eight to 10 inches of ice and the aerator is running on the east side.

West Okoboji Lake has a few open holes on the lake yet being kept open by geese.

The rest of the lake has three to five inches of ice but may be thinner in the main lake basin.
