Body found during kidnapping investigation

Posted:
SAC COUNTY (KWWL) -

A kidnapping case in Sac County is now a part of a death investigation.

It all happened near the town of Early.  A woman flagged down a passer-by to say she'd been kidnapped.  While investigating the kidnapping, authorities found a body in a house.

Investigators say the suspect visited an acquaintance in Storm Lake, told her his car broke down and he needed a ride back to his home in Early.

When they got there, he said he was kidnapping her. He then tied her up in the car and drove away, but ran off road. That's when she was able to escape and a farmer called police.

Sheriff's deputies investigating the claim quickly found 21-year-old Kirk Levin.  The body found in the house is believed to be Levin's mother, but authorities have not released a name.

Levin made his first court appearance in Sac County court Friday morning.
The judged explained the charges, which also include assault with intent to commit sexual abuse.

Prosecutors say Levin has been in jail since he was 17 and asked the judge to raise the bond to $500,000.

The Sac County Sheriff Ken McClure says this case could have been worse:  "The girl that was kidnapped was very lucky to be alive. We truly believe we saved her life."
