DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -
In the wake of the school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, a Siouxland lawmaker says the Iowa legislature should ban semi-automatic guns, and buy them back from gunowners if possible.
In an interview with the Carroll Daily-Herald newspaper, Democrat Rep. Dan Muhlbauer, who represents Carroll and Crawford counties in the Iowa House, said it is time to act with "radical changes" on gun laws and other issues to protect schoolchildren from shooting sprees like the one in Newtown.
If the so-called "buy back" plan won't work, Muhlbauer suggested making a crime to carry them saying, "If we find them on the street, there's going to have to be some sort of penalty for them."
