Cedar Falls Walmart barred from selling alcohol until Feb. 9

A local Walmart's alcohol license has been suspended for a month starting Friday because of two alcohol violations in two years.

The Walmart Supercenter in Cedar Falls is no longer able to sell or give away any beer or other alcohol from 6 a.m. Friday through 6 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, according to city officials and the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division.

The store must also pay a $1,500 fine as part of the settlement agreement.

Back in September, the Cedar Falls City Council ordered Walmart's alcohol permit suspended after an employee was found to have sold alcohol to a minor in July of last year -- a violation of Iowa Code.

That was the second violation of its kind at the Cedar Falls Walmart in two years, according to officials.

Jim Renfrow was listed as the licensee for the alcohol permit of the Cedar Falls Walmart Supercenter, according to city documents.

Dianna Gee, a Walmart corporate spokesperson, says the company took steps to correct the problem once they heard of the incident.  They re-emphasized their policy with associates and provided additional training.

Gee added that the cashier involved in the latest incident is no longer with the company.

Gee says Walmart believes "selling alcohol to a minor is clearly unacceptable, and we recognize this is a serious matter".
