Montez Caples, the Waterloo man who was convicted of the murder of Robert Shannon of Parkersburg, has been sentenced to life in prison.
Caples was convicted of shooting Shannon in the back of the head while they were in a car parked on a Waterloo street.
Shannon's body was found several hours later when neighbors told police the car had been idling for a while.
In a Black Hawk County courtroom Friday morning, a judge sentenced Caples to life in prison without parole.
Family members of Caples and Shannon were in court. Shannon's family gave an impact statement.
Caples spoke as well, reciting scriptures from the Bible.
"I don't understand why he took my son's life," said Salli Jo Shannon, Robert Shannon's mother. "I don't understand what Bobby did to him to take his life, but I don't hate him. Angry, but don't hate him."
