WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Waterloo police arrested an Iowa Falls man on Monday after an investigation into the death of his two-month-old daughter.

Trevor Smith, 27, was arrested Monday and charged with first-degree murder and child endangerment resulting in death.

Waterloo police were called to 1012 Wellington Street at around 10:32 p.m. on Sept. 26 for a report of an unresponsive baby.

Captain Tim Pillack says Smith told officers that he was giving the girl a bottle "when she went stiff and had trouble breathing."

The girl was taken to Covenant Medical Center and later transferred to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Pillack says doctors determined the girl had a brain bleed that was consistent with non-accidental trauma.

Smith was interviewed by investigators and admitted to shaking the girl two different times because she wouldn't stop crying.

Pillack says the girl died on Oct. 2 after being removed from life support. He says the autopsy showed her injuries were consistent with the shaking Smith described to investigators.

Smith was arrested at an apartment in Iowa Falls on Monday.

He is currently being held in the Black Hawk County Jail on a $500,000 bail for the murder charge, and a $100,000 for the child endangerment charge.
