HINTON, Iowa (KTIV) -- -
The NFL playoff games were very entertaining this weekend. For one Siouxland teen, the best part was taking home a national championship. 14-year-old Jay Small of Hinton won the 51st Punt, Pass and Kick competition in the 14 and 15 year old age range.
Small won the title with a combined total of 417, feet-7 inches.
Small punted the ball 136-feet, passed it 154-feet, 11 inches...that's over 50 yards...and kicked it 126 feet, 8-inches.
He was actually trailing his opponent heading into the final event, and like the Falcons and Seahawks game, it came down to one kick.
"He was winning going into my final kick," said Small. "I still got a lower kick than he did but I had a better pass than he did, so I ended up winning."
It's the second time Small has reached the national finals. He placed second in the 10-11 year old bracket when the competition was held in San Diego.
His experience helped him handle the pressure.
"I was way more nervous the first time than I was the second time," said Small. "The first time when I was practicing before the competition, it was not good. The nerves were getting to me. This time it wasn't too bad."
Small is an 8th-grader at Hinton.
