Cedar Rapids man takes plea deal in kidnapping case

The trial for a Cedar Rapids man accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a 62-year-old woman in 2011 ended Tuesday after a plea deal was reached.

Just before the second day of jury selection was set to begin, 51-year-old William Roby reached a plea deal, according to prosecutors.

Prosecutors say extenuating circumstances forced them to reach a deal with Roby. They would not elaborate on the circumstances.

Roby, who was originally charged with first-degree kidnapping, pleaded guilty to third-degree kidnapping and third-degree sexual abuse.

Roby admitted in court that he held the woman against her will for 10 hours on May 15, 2011, and sexually assaulted her. He also threatened to kill the woman and her cat.

Police say Roby had dated the woman in the past.

A sentencing date has not been set.
