SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -

Starting this week mass will be altered.

Father Brent Lingle says to avoid unnecessary touching they will not shake hands during the exchange of the sign of peace.

He also says parishioners will not hold hands during Our Father, and communion distributors will be encouraged use proper hand washing techniques.

"And the one thing that we leave to the priest and that is strongly recommended is that part of our practice is receiving communion under both forms and that takes the chalice, so have asked our priest to strongly consider to not do that. We didn't make that mandatory across the board but a lot our priest have taken that step and decided for now we are not going to offer the cup" Father Brent Lingle, the Director of the Office of Worship for Diocese of Sioux City said.

These changes are in place for all the 113 parishes in for the Diocese of Sioux City.

Lingle says these practices will continue until the spread of the flu decreases.

He says there is a sense of relief among the parishioners that these precautions are being taken.
