Saturday, officials released new details including the names of the victims in Friday night's deadly car crash on Highway 81.
The Pierce County Attorney says 83-year old Ralph Schmidt of Norfolk, Nebraska died when the pick-up he was driving was hit head-on by an SUV around five p-m Friday.
A passenger in his vehicle, 70-year old Robbie Heinemann was air-lifted to a Sioux City hospital where she's listed in critical condition.
The SUV was driven by 60-year old Sara Krahn of Manitoba, Canada. Krahn and her three passengers including a three-year old child, were all hospitalized. Two remained hospitalized in stable condition Saturday. The child and another passenger were treated and released.
Authorities spent hours on the scene trying to piece together what happened.
"There was a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox that was making a pass traveling soutbound on Route 81m Pierce County. While making that pass that vehicle struck a northbound Chevrolet pick-up," said Lt. Dan Wilson of the Nebraska State Patrol.
The crash, which happened a mile north of the 81-98 junction tied up traffic, and kept a 10-mile stretch of Highway 81shut down for several hours .
