Eastern Iowa volunteers honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.


The University of Northern Iowa will host Martin Luther King Junior Day of Service.

From 9:00 Monday morning to 12:30 volunteers will participate in various service projects included in the event, are the Northeast Iowa Food Bank, Cedar Valley Hospitality House, and The Catholic Work House.

The event will end with a luncheon and guest speaker, Michael Blackwell, director of UNI's Center of Multicultural Education.

In Cedar Rapids, the 27th annual "Remembering Martin Luncheon" will be held Monday at the Hotel at Kirkwood Center.

The United Way of East Central Iowa will host the event that will recognize over 20 student leaders.

In addition Coe College, Mt. Mercy University, and the United Way of East Central Iowa have come together to provide ways in which you can volunteer in the community. That event starts at 11:30 a.m.

In Iowa City, the "Each One Reach One" Americorps members are hosting a "Day of Service Extravaganza."

The event will be at Grant Wood Elementary School in Iowa City starting at noon.

Youth will be able to learn about Dr. King's legacy. The event will offer entertainment from local musicians, lunch, and an opportunity to participate in a service project.
