Former jail employee jailed for theft

A former Dakota County Nebraska jail employee is accused of stealing money from a jail inmate.  According to an affidavit, 44-year-old Mason Billings, is charged with one count of theft.  He's accused of stealing $400 last September from an inmate who was booked at the Dakota County jail.  Court documents say Billings admitted to taking the money and later sent a letter to the Dakota County jail director containing two money orders totaling $400.  Billings was arrested Friday and is now being held at the Dakota County jail.

UPDATE: Police search for suspects in rash of NE Nebraska burglaries

Police are looking for suspects in a series of burglaries in northeast Nebraska.  In the past month, 13 businesses have been hit and police say many of the targets are unusual, like the Marathon Press print shop in Norfolk.  Red Bud Hardware store in Battle Creek was also hit, as were law offices, and tire stores.  Police are advising business owners to keep cash registers empty at night and to install alarm systems.

Doctor: New pertussis booster requirement benefits middle schoolers, infants

A new law in Iowa requires all seventh grade students to get vaccinated for pertussis for the next school year.  Iowa health officials say the disease runs in cycles, and the staggering numbers lately made the changes necessary.  One nurse at Siouxland District Health wants parents to be "proactive."  She says cases of pertussis have skyrocketed and it's better to get your shots now.

Siouxland community honors Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

To honor and celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Junior, Briar Cliff University students read to kids at Crescent Park Elementary for the holiday.  They read a book called, "Happy Birthday Martin Luther King, Jr." which connects young children with American history.  Briar Cliff students read to six Sioux City elementary schools and a girl scout troop as part of MLK junior day.
