Jury selection is underway in the first degree murder trial of one of three men accused in the murder of an Iowa City landlord.

Justin Marshall, 22, is one of three men accused in the October 8, 2009 murder of 64-year-old John Versypt.  Versypt, who was from Illinois, was checking on of his properties, the Broadway Condominiums, when he was gunned down during a failed robbery attempt.

Charles Thompson, 20, took a plea deal in December 2011, days before his second trial was to start.  His first trial ended in a mistrial after the portion of a taped interview that was deemed inadmissible was played for the jury.

In the plea deal, Thompson pleaded guilty to accessory to felony and agreed to testify against Marshall.

Marshall's trial is expected to last two weeks, with opening arguments expected to begin Wednesday afternoon.

Courtney White, 25, is also charged with first degree murder in the case.  His trial is scheduled to begin on May 1.

If convicted of first-degree murder, Marshall and White will face a mandatory sentence of life in prison.

Thompson is scheduled to be sentenced on the lesser charge on February 15.
