Chicago couple creates copper colored floor with pennies

Like many young couples, Ryan Lange and Emily Belden were looking for inspiration while deciding how to renovate the bedroom of their Chicago home.  That inspiration finally came from a quick glance at a jar of change. 

The couple documented their project on their blog, 'The Penny Floor.'  They dubbed the project, which took four months, "Pennying."  

The pair first put down a special glue that acts like grout, then individually placed the pennies on the floor of their bedroom.   An estimated 59,670 pennies were used to cover the floor, which was then sanded down to a shiny copper sheen and cemented with a clear coat, as smooth as a sheet of glass.  Ryan and Emily say the project cost about $1,000, which included a lot of trips to the bank for more pennies.  According the blog, the pair spent a total of 128 hours on the floor.

Two rare pennies are part of the floor; a 1944 World War II steel penny and an 1873 Indian head penny.
