IOWA CITY (KWWL) -
The Johnson County Salvation Army fell short of their goal for their 2012 Christmas campaign, but still wanted to thank the community for their generosity.
Lia Pontarelli, Director of Development and Communication, says the organization raised $334,105, which is $15,895 short of their $350,000 goal, or 95 percent of their goal.
Pontarelli says that in addition to the money collected, 8,204 toys were given to 1,172 area kids.
"We have a very giving community, and we saw that this Christmas season between the donations, volunteer hours and toys given," said Tim Dwight, honorary chairman, in a written statement. "It is only because of the ongoing support from the community that we can continue to make an impact in lives of those hurting and losing hope.
"We may not have met our goal, but I want to thank everyone for their generosity and support to help us raise what we did," he added.
Nationally, the Salvation Army has only raised $2,083,514 of their $3 million goal as of Thursday, or just 69.4 percent of their goal.
Pontarelli says the money raised over the holidays will cover a little less than half of their yearly operating budget, so they still need community help throughout the rest of the year.
The money helps pay for 364 nights of dinner for anyone in the community as well as character-building youth programs, according to the organization.
