Sgt. Bluff-Luton senior Colton McCrystal won the MRAC title at 132 pounds, improving to 39-0.
SERGEANT BLUFF, Iowa (KTIV) -
It looked like a two-team race for the Missouri River Conference wrestling title. Sgt. Bluff-Luton was hosting and was the defending champ.
Right on their heels was North, who won in '10 and '11 and is 24-1 in duals this season.
Let's get right into in the title match at 120 pounds. Tied 4-4 in the final seconds, North's Shane Gill gets the takedown on SBL's Duece Phaly. Gill wins the conference championship, 6 to 4.
No contest at 126 pounds. North's Dalton Hanson got a 15-0 technical fall over his opponent from AL to take the title.
SBL gets a title at 138. Steven Garcia with a takedown, on his way to an 8-3 decision and a first-place medal.
Terrific bout at 145. West High's Taron Flemister in overtime against a T-J wrestler. Flemister gets a pair of late takedowns to win the conference title 6-3.
The meet's top wrestler is SBL's Colton McCrystal. He wins the title at 132 pounds with a first period pin over North's Alberto Jurado. The Nebraska recruit keeps his record perfect at 39 and 0.
"I'm just trying to make a statement this year," said McCrystal. "Leave no doubt that I'm going to Nebraska and that's where I belong, at a division one program. I'm trying to score bonus points in every match and that's what I've done so far. Conference is pretty good for us. There's always a couple of ranked kids at every weight so it's nice to get out there and be able to compete with them."
North does win the conference title back from SBL, with 234 points, 20 more than the Warriors.
Council Bluffs TJ was third, East was fourth. CBAL was fifth, ahead of Bishop Heelan and West.
