DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -
On Saturday, former Bishop Heelan grad and baseball standout Don Wengert was inducted into the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
Wengert was one of two player inducted this year.
After graduating from Heelan in 1988, Wengert continued his baseball career at Iowa State, where he was a four year starter and letter winner.
He was then drafted in the fourth round of the 1992 major league baseball draft by the Oakland Athletics.
Wengert made his major league debut in 1995 and appeared in 160 games during his pro career.
He played for the A's, Cubs, Royals, Padres, Braves and Pirates, before retiring in 1991.
Other award winners at the IHSBCA 45th Awards Banquet include Alta/Aurelia's Dan Wendel who was named the 2A Northwest District Coach of the Year.
Heelan's Andy Osborne was named coach of the year in the West District for 3A.
Sioux City East's Jared Ocker earned coach of the year honors in the West District for 4A.
