Cedar Rapids gathers feedback on proposed drought plan

Posted:
CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

With the snow coming down and the rain recently you may not be thinking about drought, but the City of Cedar Rapids is.

Tuesday the city held a meeting for residents to comment on a proposed drought plan.  The plan has different stages.  During lower levels of droughts, all residents and businesses would be asked to voluntarily reduce water usage.  As the drought worsens, reduction becomes mandatory.

Small business owners fear that the city's plan will hurt their operations since all water users will be asked to reduce use if the drought continues.

"I use about 20-25 gallons to wash a straight truck or a semi truck," said Randy Lucore, or Cedar Rapids. "We can do measures to limit the amount of water we're using by not cleaning them as well."

There will be another public input meeting Thursday, February 7.

Officials hope to have a drought plan approved by the city council by the end of February.
