USHL Fall Classic takes 'hiatus' in 2013

After hosting the USHL Fall Classic for the last six years, Sioux City will have to bid for the event in 2014. After hosting the USHL Fall Classic for the last six years, Sioux City will have to bid for the event in 2014.

The Sioux City Musketeers have hosted the USHL's Fall Classic for the last six years. Last year alone, the event brought all 16 league teams, over 200 pro and college scouts, and $1.7 million to the Sioux City economy.

On Friday, the USHL announced it's not holding the event this year because of scheduling issues. The league's regular season will start earlier than ever, on September 20th, and the Tyson Events Center is booked prior to that.

Rather than seek an interim site, the league will open the event up for bidding next year to all USHL teams and outside third parties as well.

USHL Commissioner Skip Prince says the league is not leaving the Fall Classic behind. He says the hiatus is to make the event bigger and better.

If Sioux City doesn't win the next bidding battle, they won't necessarily be left out. Commissioner Prince noted specifically the USHL's intent to place at least a regional preseason event in Sioux City.

"The Musketeers and Sioux City have been the heart of the Fall Classic and are largely responsible for its success and growth," said Prince. "We count them as friends and partners, and want to make sure we enjoy a strong preseason event there."

Musketeers vice president Rich Zaber says the team is making plans to host a preseason tourney with the enitre Western Conference in the second or third week of September.

Zaber says Sioux City will also be a part of the bidding process for the return of the Fall Classic.
