SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -
You've probably heard breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But not all cereals are created equal.
On this week's Centsable Health, Fareway registered dietitian Whitney Packebush sorts through the best options.
Look at the ingredients list. The first ingredient should be "whole grain" or "whole wheat." Other natural, whole grains include barley, corn, oats, quinoa, rice, rye or spelt, just to name a few.
A good cereal should provide at least 3 grams of fiber per serving. Sodium should be less than 240 mg per serving.
Keep in mind that milk adds about 100 mg sodium to the meal. Be especially careful with low calorie cereals because they may add sodium to improve taste.
The sugar should be less than 7 grams per serving. Dried fruit may be coated in sugar so you're better off adding your own fruit instead.
