Fire crews were called to a house fire at 1555 170th Street near Whispering Creek at about 3:30 Friday morning. Firefighters say when they arrived, they found the house completely engulfed in flames. They say it appears that nobody lived in the house. The fire is out now, but crews remain on the scene. They're investigating the cause.
A 23-year-old Sioux City man who admitted to bludgeoning two people with a crowbar as they slept has been sentenced to 75 years in prison. James Kroll, Jr. pleaded guilty to second degree murder and attempted murder in last year's attack that killed 54-year-old Jeffrey Moravek and severely injured Mary Tope, the mother of Kroll's ex-girlfriend. At Thursday's sentencing, Kroll apologized, saying he was high on K2 and had intended to commit suicide and didn't want Moravek and Tope to stop him.
Wastewater treatment is the focus of a conference going on in Sioux City. Equipment manufacturers, chemical engineers, regulatory agencies, and Siouxland businesses all have an interest in the event. The public works department is putting on the event which includes 20 vendor booths and presentations on improving the quality of wastewater before it goes to the treatment plant.
