Morningside has two games left in the regular season.
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -
The Morningside women's basketball team is in sole possession of first place in the GPAC.
And, with an 85-73 win over rival Briar Cliff Saturday, the Mustangs inched closer to claiming their first regular season crown since the 2008-2009 season.
6th ranked Morningside led start to finish, and never trailed against the 9th ranked Chargers, and they did it every which way, except from beyond the arc.
The Mustangs rank third in the nation in 3-pointers but went just 4-of-27 from downtown.
Despite poor shooting from the outside, M'side did the dirty work on the inside.
The Mustangs outrebounded the Chargers 54-37, 20 of which came on the offensive glass, leading to 30 second chance points.
M'side also won the turnover battle 18-16, scoring 22 points off those turnovers.
"They're a good team and we knew they could do anything they wanted," Ashlynn Muhl said. "But, we knew we needed to set the tempo ourselves instead of letting them do what they want and playing with them. We did a really good job from the get-go of setting our pace and playing our game."
Morningside is at Mount Marty on Wednesday.
