Cedar Rapids girl reports being approached by stranger on way to school

Posted:

Cedar Rapids police say a 12-year-old girl reported being approached by a stranger in a dark blue van on her way to school Tuesday morning.

The girl was on her way to McKinley Middle School between 7 and 8 a.m. Tuesday when the van stopped in the 1200 block of 3rd Avenue SE, according to Sgt. Cristy Hamblin with the Cedar Rapids Police Department.

The girl reported that when she ran across the street, the driver opened the door and yelled at her to stop and come back. The girl ignored the commands and ran to school where she reported the incident to staff immediately.

Hamblin says the incident was reported to police immediately and the area was searched, but the van was not found.

The driver of the van is described as a 30- to 40-year-old white man with dark brown mohawk-styled hair, wearing a gray t-shirt and blue jeans.

If you have any information regarding this incident, call Linn County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-CS-CRIME (272-7463) or text to CRIMES (274637) and in the message/subject, type 5227 and your tip. You can continue to trade information with an investigator. Text STOP to opt out at any time.

If the information you give leads to an arrest, you may be eligible for a reward. All calls are anonymous.

Hamblin encourages parents to talk to their school-age children about what to do in situations like this.

She says parents should walk the route to school with their children and look for businesses, churches or other schools where they could go to report incidents.
