Waterloo East senior headed to national speech tournament

A high school senior from Waterloo qualified for a national speech tournament for the second time after besting opponents in a district tournament.

Gabe Evans, a senior from Waterloo East High School, took first place in dramatic interpretation at the East Iowa District Tournament last weekend at Burlington High School.

His win qualified him to compete at the National Forensics League's National Tournament in Birmingham, Alabama, this summer.

Evans is the third student from Waterloo East to have qualified for nationals in the last five years, according to the Waterloo Community School District.

It is also Evans' second time qualifying for nationals.

Also qualifying as alternates in the National Tournament were senior Paris Haynes in humorous interpretation, and junior Dante Miller in Lincoln-Douglas debate.
