State audit shows Masonville clerk improperly paid herself
A state audit shows a former Masonville clerk improperly paid herself nearly $80,000 over more than a decade.
The report on the small northeast Iowa town studied finances between March 2002 and November 2011. It revealed Christine King issued unauthorized checks to herself for payroll, reimbursements and mileage.
According to authorities, King told them she intended to balance the payments by not issuing future checks but was unable to stop after her husband lost his job.
The audit also revealed payment issues with the mayor and city council members.
