WASHINGTON, D.C. (KTIV) -
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack says the U.S. is very disappointed with Russia's announcement that it is suspending imports of all U.S. meat. Russia says it is practicing zero tolerance for the presence ractopamine. That's an additive that's used in the United States and 26 other countries.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture says the additive has been shown to be completely safe at levels established by the Food and Drug Administration and theCodex Alimentarius Commission, the international food safety standards body.
Vilsack says Russia refused to discuss the safety of the additive and simply suspended U.S. meat imports.
