Thursday night, Denver-Tripoli's Brandon Sorenson began his quest to be the next four-time state wrestling champ.
Sorenson passed his first test with a major decision over Assumption's Tionte Parks to move one step closer. As he chases history, Coach Chris Krueger says Sorenson is approaching this year differently.
"He just wants to stay focused on one match at a time and not going to get caught up in the hoopla and everything that's surrounding him," Denver-Tripoli Head Coach Chris Krueger said. "He knows what's out there, and what he's trying to accomplish, and just doesn't want and distractions at this point, and just wants to keep at it."
Teammate Chase Shedenhelm also moved on needing just 21 seconds in his opening match at 182.
West Delaware's team title hopes got a big boost right off the bat with a pin at 106 by Patrick Woods.
Teammate Zach Less followed suit with a hard fought decision at 113. In all, seven Hawks advanced in the championship bracket.
Union would also move on four wrestlers spurred on by defending champ Max Thomsen's tech fall at 126.
"I'm feeling good. I'm just going to keep on my feet, stay away from everybody, and try to do the same thing I did last year, but I'm going to try to separate myself more," Union Sophomore Max Thomsen said.
Decorah's Andy Hovden got the job done at 220 after a 3, nothing decision.
Undefeated 120 pounder Leighton Gaul of New Hampton picked up a major decision. His road to the state title, however, goes through Charlie Jones, the defending champ from Waterloo Columbus ended his match early pinning Creston's Wyatt Thompson in the first period.
"I'm happy with my start," Columbus Senior Charlie Jones said. "I set up my shots really well, and executed fine, so if I can carry that in to tomorrow I'll be fine."
