The Sioux City West girls basketball team is having the best season in school history. The Wolverines are 18-4 and ranked ninth in the new Class 5A.
The 18 wins is a school record and they're just one win away from the state tournament. That 18th win came on Saturday, with a 56-50 victory over East in the regional semifinals.
West is the highest scoring team in Class 5A, averaging over 64 points per game. Their field goal percentage of 42 percent ranks 11th best out of the 5A teams.
Playing a tough schedule has given the Wolverines confidence as they head into the regional final on Tuesday.
"I didn't know all the records we were going to break, I had no -- I'm don't really keep track of all the records. But, with all the records we did break, it's a pretty awesome season," Head Coach Betsy Reynolds said. "It's been really neat to see all the girls hard work pay off. We couldn't have asked for a better season."
"It's been remarkable watching how low we've started to how high we've come. It's a cool experience and fun to be apart of it, you know," Senior Shantel Cross added."
West will face second-ranked Ankeny for a trip to the state tournament.
The Wolverines finished second in the Missouri River Conference race and had winning streaks of nine, five and four games.
They say they won't be intimidated by anyone.
"Even though we've won 14 of our last 15, we can't just rely on that," said Sammie Birkes. "We can't go in thinking that we've got this game. We have to play our game."
"We're going to try not to get into their game. We're just going to try to get into our game not play their game, play our own and do our own thing pretty much," added Tanya Meyer.
West and Ankeny play on Tuesday at 7 o'clock, in Webster City.
