The three companies vying for the license to build a land-based casino in Sioux City are turning to social media. Ho-Chunk, Inc., Penn National Gaming and Sioux City Entertainment all are using Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to sell their proposals to the public and build support. One expert says social media allows casino developers to reach out to people in new, personal ways.
A woman has filed a civil lawsuit months after her son was struck and a killed by an SUV on a Sioux City street. Twenty-two -year-old Lance Knudsen was hit as he walked across Floyd Boulevard last September. The driver fled the scene. Mischelle De Cora has filed a negligence suit against the owner of the vehicle, who police identified as Victoria Ernst of Sioux City, although she has not been identified as the driver.
Republican Mike Johanns of Nebraska says he's retiring from the U.S. Senate because he and his wife both felt that they've spent enough time in public service. The 62-year-old Johanns announced on Monday that he will not seek re-election next year. He says his decision was focused largely on a desire to spend more time with his family.
Recognition for some Women of Distinction. The Yankton Area Chamber of Commerce and Women Community Leaders Committee hosted the Women of Distinction Luncheon on Monday. Nine women who work to make their community a better place were nominated for two awards. Judi O'Connell was named Outstanding Professional, while Jane Pugh received the Outstanding Community Service award.
