Pedestrian bridge approved at Meyers Lake as part of cousins memorial

EVANSDALE (KWWL) -

Construction of a pedestrian bridge at Meyers Lake in Evansdale could begin soon.

Saturday, the city's park board unanimously approved the first phase of the memorial which honors murdered cousins Lyric Cook and Elizabeth Collins.

The girls disappeared July 13th near Meyers Lake. Hunters found their bodies at a park in Bremer County five months later.

The planning of a permanent memorial began almost immediately after the girls' bodies were discovered.

Board members said Saturday's vote wasn't difficult.

"It wasn't hard at all," said Park Board President Jeff Dawson. "It's the right thing to do and it's going to benefit the community overall."

Dawson said the big memorial for the cousins will be located on the island in Meyers Lake. He said maintenance of the memorial on the island will require extra mowing, but it will not require taxes to increase for people who live in Evansdale.

Saturday's vote approves construction of a pedestrian walkway that will connect the island to the park at Meyers Lake, recently named Angels Park in memory of the murdered cousins.

President of the Evansdale Chamber of Commerce Dona Frickson said although the cousins murder prompted the park plans to happen, she hopes it serves as a memorial for all people who have lost a loved one.

"This is for the whole community," she said.

Tom Nichols agreed. Nichols is a member of the park board in Evansdale. He's also the father of 22-year old Lindsay Nichols who was shot and killed in March 2012.

"I think the whole project is kind of a nice little project to hopefully bring some peace and a place where people can remember all their angels," said Nichols.

Organizers don't know how long the memorial will take to complete. Weather permitting, they would like to start construction as early as next week.

"We're going to keep going as long as we have volunteers and money coming in. We're going to make this an awesome place to visit," said Frickson.

To help with Angels Park, donations can be made to the "Angels Memorial" fund at First Security State Bank or the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa.
