The Sioux City City Council approves an operating budget for the next fiscal year. The spending plan passed Monday night with Keith Radig casting the lone vote against it. Radig says he didn't vote for it because it contains a tax increase. Property taxes will go up $45 dollars for the average homeowner. The police and fire departments will each lose one administrative position through attrition. Council members say the cuts could be a sign of what's to come because of increasing pension costs.
Federal budget cuts that could automatically kick in Friday would impact the bottom line of Siouxland school districts. Sioux City public schools stand to lose up to 15 positions in the Title 1 program, up to 11 teaching positions in the Iowa Early Intervention Program, and five teacher's aides in special education. That's the worst case scenario, according to the district's chief financial officer.
The search continues for a man who robbed the Pronto store at 18th and Highway 75 in Sioux City early Sunday morning. Police say a man fled with an undisclosed amount of cash after telling the clerk he had a gun, but not showing one. The suspect is described as a black man in his 20s, five-feet-seven, and weighing around 150 pounds. He was wearing a purple bandana, blue hooded sweatshirt, and jeans.
And if you have a snowbound car on a Sioux City street, move it now or it's going to be towed. The police department says that at eight o'clock Tuesday morning, it will start towing cars that have not been moved since last week's snow storm. City ordinance prohibits parking on Sioux City streets for more than 24 hours.
