SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -

Green Eggs and Ham is not just a fictional dish, it was a real item on the menu for students at Sioux City's elementary schools on Friday.

During lunch at Irving Elementary, students enjoyed Doctor Seuss themed sandwiches.

It's part of the Read Across America event, celebrated annually near children's author Doctor Seuss' birthday.

Students were also given 15 minutes to read books which is the goal for the event.

"Let them know that reading is fun, that's the most important thing, if they love it, they'll do it," Lonnie Hill, teacher said.

Students were given a book to take home as part of the celebration.
