Sioux City looks to keep pollution out of waterways

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -

Sioux City continues its efforts to educate the public on the importance of maintaining clean waterways.

Officials say improper disposal of chemicals, poor maintenance of construction sites, and littering make it harder for the city to maintain its sewer system, and that costs all tax payers in the long run.

"All the litter on the streets goes directly to the storm water.  So, going to the Floyd Canal, or the Big Sioux, Little Sioux, or the Missouri River," said the city's Environmental Analyst, Derek Carmona.

The city operates under a permit from the state which says how much pollution they are allowed to discharge.  Sioux City leaders will get an update on the health of the local waterways Monday at city hall.
