SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -
The Washington Elementary project in Sioux City can move ahead.
The school board approved the street work, demolition of the existing building, and construction of the new one.
Right now, the last few houses are being removed. After school lets out this spring, demolition will start.
The site can then be leveled, and the street redone. Geo-thermal wells will be put in to heat and cool the building.
"It was more economical to replace that school with a more modern classrooms, provides more daylight, energy efficient, provides the support spaces that they need for all the programing in the building," says Mel McKern, Director of Operations and Construction for the school board.
Construction for the new school will start in October with an a completion date of June 2015.
