SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -
Fire damaged a home near Sioux City's downtown, Wednesday afternoon.
It happened on the corner of 10th and Jones. Authorities believe the fire started in the basement at around 4:00pm.
Because of the heavy smoke throughout the house, fire crews had trouble gaining access to basement area.
"When you have a house full of smoke, visibility is sometimes hard to find the areas to get into the basement areas. So it makes it a challenge for us, but we were able to manage through that and find the seed of the fire and extinguish the fire itself," said Lt. Joe Rodriguez of Sioux City Fire Rescue.
No one was at home at the time. Fire officials say three dogs and a cat were inside. Only one dog survived.
The fire cause is under investigation.
