SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - In an effort to fight childhood obesity and get children active, the Wellmark Foundation awarded a 20-thousand dollar grant to Siouxland District Health Department today.
The grant money will be used to fund after school programs and equipment for the students to use.
Beyond the Bell after school program will be implementing a new CATCH curriculum that teaches children about nutrition and gets them at least 30-minutes of activity four days a week.
Students in the after school program at Riverside Elementary were presented with a giant check for the money.
Students like ally Hughes are looking forward to getting some new equipment, so they can play new sports.
"We get to play volleyball and play baseball sometimes...It's really meant a lot to me since my parents work late," said Ally Hughes
Wellness Foundation Director Matt McGarvey says it means a lot to his foundation to know they are helping future generations live healthier, better lives.
