SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -

Spring's quickly approaching. That means two things, warmer weather and the start of road construction.

That includes Interstate 29 in Sioux City. Work there is set to begin as early as Monday, depending on the weather.

Next week, construction crews will begin work on a stretch of I-29 between mile marker 142, near Sergeant Bluff, and the Sergeant Floyd Monument, closing down some lanes.

"Eventually, we will have a crossover where the northbound traffic will go down to one lane and then move over to the southbound lanes," said Dakin Schultz, Iowa DOT.

Then in April, crews will do some retaining wall work on the south side of I-29 near the Wesley Parkway Interchange, which will be another detour for drivers.

"That ramp from South Sioux onto I-29 Southbound will have to be closed for a period of time," said Schultz.

As we get into the summer, the DOT says reconstruction on the I-29/Highway 20 Interchange will be underway.

The first ramp to be closed is the one that goes from I-29 North to US 20 East.

After that's complete, attention will turn towards a couple of loops within the same interchange, one that goes from I-29 North into the South Sioux City loop, the other going from Highway 20 East to I-29 North.

With detours expected with all of the projects, DOT officials say it's important to stay focused on the road and take your time.

"We want everybody to slow down through the construction zone to be aware of the change in the traffic patterns, pay attention to the signs, and make sure they allow enough room for the construction activity," said Schultz.

The DOT says construction on I-29 between Sergeant Bluff and the Floyd Monument should be complete by Thanksgiving.
