Matt McDonough talks to the media about going for a third national title.
Iowa City, IA (KTIV) -
The NCAA Wrestling Tournament begins Friday in Des Moines, and the Iowa Hawkeyes are sending nine wrestlers to the Capital City in the hopes of crowning nine national champions.
The Hawkeyes have four wrestlers that are the top seed in their weight classes.
History is also on the line for senior Matt McDonough at 125 pounds.
McDonough is looking to become the seventh wrestler in program history to win three national titles.
He won the 125 pound championship as a freshman in 2010, and again last year.
"It's just that time of year. It's that time to rise to the occasion. It's a time to be a Saturday nighter," McDonough said.
"I think absolutely, added excitement, pressure," Head Coach Tom Brands said of the event being held at Wells Fargo Arena. "You have a lot of fans, and the more you have pulling for you, the more energy for you. So, good pressure."
Iowa and Nebraska both have seven wrestlers in the tourney. Northern Iowa has four participants.
The first round begins Thursday.
