Creighton celebrates after being selected for the NCAA women's basketball tournament.
OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) -
The Creighton women's basketball team went 24-7 this season, the second highest win total in school history. But the Jays were not a lock to make the NCAA tournament.
Creighton was one of the last teams in but their reaction shows that the wait was worth it.
The Jays, including junior Carli Tritz of Bishop Heelan, are the 10th seed and will face Syracuse on Saturday morning in Tennessee.
It's just the second at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament in program history and fifth overall berth.
"I just closed my eyes and tried not to let the tears come and then all of the sudden I heard people going crazy and I looked up and saw our name and heard Creighton," said senior Ally Jensen. "It was one of the happiest feeling I've probably felt."
"To basically be the last one in, because I knew we weren't going to be a fifteen and I knew we weren't going to be a two, it's a pretty incredible feeling, pretty incredible," said head coach Jim Flanery.
Creighton plays at 10:20 AM Central time on Saturday morning against Syracuse.
