UPDATE: Democratic official says Sen. Tim Johnson will retire

Democratic officials say South Dakota Democratic Sen. Tim Johnson intends to announce his retirement on Tuesday.  It's a decision that gives Republicans a prime opportunity to pick up a seat in 2014.

The announcement will be held at Johnson's alma mater, the University of South Dakota in Vermillion.  It will be held at 3:00 p.m.

Johnson is chairman of the Senate Banking Committee. He suffered a brain hemorrhage in 2006 and later returned to the Senate and won re-election in 2008 while sometimes using a motorized scooter.

He is the fifth Democrat to decide to step aside at the end of the term, as have two Republicans. The GOP must gain six seats in 2014 to win a majority.

The officials who described Johnson's plans spoke on condition of anonymity, saying they were not authorized to pre-empt an announcement.

Former GOP Gov. Mike Rounds has announced his candidacy for the seat.

KTIV News Channel 4 will be there and we'll have the latest information about the announcement from Senator Johnson and his future plans.
