The three casino operators did their best to 'wow' the commissioners and grow public support for their plan. Commissioners were met with a concert atmosphere for the proposed Hard Rock, an intimate conversation with Ho-Chunk officials about their hopes for a Warrior Hotel and Casino, and the glitz and glam of tinsel-town showed what Penn National Gaming's Hollywood casinos would look like.
Estherville, Iowa lays native son Steven Blass to rest. The 27-year-old Army Staff Sergeant died in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan on March 11th. Hundreds turned out for his funeral service Tuesday in the local high school gym. Family, friends, and community members remembered Blass for his commitment to teamwork and passion for his country. Blass is survived by his wife, Tricia, and their 16-month-old son, Hayden.
South Dakota Senator Tim Johnson says it'll be "strange" to not have an election looming. Johnson announced on Tuesday in Vermillion that he will retire at the end of his term and will not run for re-election next year. The 66-year-old Democrat is in his third term in the U.S. Senate. Before that, he was a member of the U.S. House going back to 1986. President Obama says Johnson has worked tirelessly over three decades and wished him well.
A proposed rural water district for 1,100 homes in Madison, Stanton, and Platte Counties in Nebraska is reportedly getting support from its potential customers. The Lower Elkhorn Natural Resources District Board says it has received overwhelming response from residents wanting to participate in a feasibility study. The water district would provide some much-needed relief for dry wells.
