North High band director charged with theft, sale of school instruments

The band director at Sioux City North High School faces criminal charges for allegedly taking instruments, and selling them on-line, and at local pawn shops.

Kevin Massey faces a charge of first-degree theft. Court documents allege Massey took the instruments, then sold them at pawn shops, and on the website That's where another North High teacher allegedly saw the instruments for sale, while looking for instruments to buy for the school district. Court documents say that teacher e-mailed other teachers about what he had found. Massey then called that teacher, and allegedly admitted selling the instruments on "Craig's List".

So far, investigators have recovered 62 items from three pawn shops worth $51,792.90.

Court documents say Massey admitted stealing instruments, starting in 2004, in an effort to pay off gambling debts.

School district spokesperson Alison Benson says Massey has been placed on leave. It was the district that notified police after they learned of the alleged thefts. Benson says the district is "cooperating fully" with the investigation.
