Crews put out underground fire in Sioux City's Yards development

The start to the Easter holiday weekend was a busy one for emergency responders.

Firefighters were called to a construction site in Sioux City's Yards development.

The area around the former John Morrell plant is where crews are working to place underground cables and install sanitary sewer lines.

That's where investigators say a personal heater used to heat the small space caused the plastic ventilation tubes to catch fire.

A firefighter had to be lowered into the pipe to put out the flames.

"We considered it a confined space at this time. We have our protocols in place to deal with confined space issues. There's limited oxygen," said Robert Wilson, Sioux City Assistant Fire Chief.

It took firefighters roughly a half hour to extinguish the fire.

The work crew was allowed to return to site.
