Hull, IA trying to find housing to keep up with growing population

HULL, Iowa (KTIV) -

You've probably heard the phrase, "If you build it they will come." But what do you do, when you're running out of places to build?

That's the dilemma facing the town of Hull, Iowa. In the last ten years, it has seen its population grow by about 11 percent. Now, they're approaching 2,200 people, but they're short on housing.

City leaders say they've been able to build some more expensive houses, but the issue is creating more apartment and single family style homes for the new workers.

"A lot of people who are in those moderate income housing, they're staying in their houses. So, yes, we have the houses, but they're not necessarily for sale," said Aaron Kooiker, city administrator for the city of Hull.

Kooiker says the northeast part of town has 17 lots available for building. One incentive being discussed is building houses in the $100-$180,000 range, and giving a grant or some kind of tax incentive to help families make the purchase.

City council is yet to formally address the housing issue, but Kooiker says they should be able to do so in the next couple of months.
